How to Write a Congratulations Card

A congratulations card does not need to be long. These steps work for almost any good news.

  1. Name the news. Start with what you are congratulating them on, such as the new house, the passed exam or the award.
  2. Mention the effort behind it. A line about the late nights, the saving or the practice tells them you noticed.
  3. Say how you feel about it. A simple "I am so happy for you" or "We are so proud of you" is warm and sincere.
  4. Look ahead. Close with a wish for what comes next.
  5. Sign it to match your relationship. "Love" suits family and friends, and "Best wishes" suits coworkers.

Here is an example:

"Congratulations on passing your nursing boards, Maria! I know how many nights you spent studying while working full time. We are all so proud of you, and your patients are going to be lucky to have you. Love, Aunt Jen"
