An engagement is some of the happiest news a friend can share. A card says congratulations in a way a text cannot, and many couples keep engagement cards with their wedding things.

How to Write an Engagement Card

Three or four sentences is plenty.

  1. Congratulate both of them by name.
  2. Say something about them as a couple. What you noticed when they met, or what they bring out in each other.
  3. Wish them well for the wedding and the marriage.
  4. Sign your name.

Example: "Dear Priya and Sam, congratulations on your engagement! Anyone who has seen you two together knew this was coming. We are so happy for you and cannot wait to celebrate. Love, Megan and Chris"

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you write in an engagement card?

Congratulate the couple by name, say something kind about them as a pair, and wish them well for the wedding and the marriage. Three or four sentences is enough.

Do I send a card if I am not invited to the engagement party?

Yes. An engagement card is a nice way to share in good news, whether or not there is a party.

Should an engagement card come with a gift?

A gift is not expected. A card on its own is a thoughtful way to say congratulations.

Who should I address the card to?

Address it to both people, for example "Dear Priya and Sam." Our guide to addressing an envelope shows how to write two names on the envelope.
