A thank you message for a doctor or nurse can be short and still mean a great deal. Medical staff rarely hear how a patient is doing after they go home, so a card that names what they did and tells them how you are now is a kind thing to receive.

Below are simple steps and more than 80 thank you notes for doctors, surgeons, nurses, hospice teams and whole hospital units, from patients and from family.

How to Write a Thank You Note to a Doctor or Nurse

Most thank you notes to medical staff are three to five sentences long.

  1. Use their name if you know it. Address the card to the doctor or nurse by name, or to the unit if many people cared for you.
  2. Mention one thing they did. A kind word before surgery or a late-night check-in is a detail people remember.
  3. Share a short update. Tell them you are home, back at work or doing well. One or two sentences is enough.
  4. Help them place you. Sign your full name and add the month of your stay or visit.

Here is an example that follows all four steps:

“Dear Maria, thank you for taking such good care of me after my knee surgery in June. You checked on me all through a long first night and always explained what was happening. I am home now and walking a little farther each day. Thank you for your kindness and your skill. Sincerely, Linda Moore”

Thank You Notes for Hospice Nurses and Staff After a Loss

Gift-Free Thank Yous and What to Leave Out

A card is all that most medical staff expect. Many hospitals and practices limit the gifts staff can accept, so a written note is always a safe choice. To do more, ask the unit whether a shared treat for the break room is welcome, or ask how to send a compliment to the person's manager.

A few things are best left out of the card:

  • Detailed medical information. Cards are often shared with the unit, and privacy rules may keep staff from replying with details. A simple update such as "I am home and doing well" is enough.
  • Questions about your care. Call the office for those instead.
  • Complaints about other staff. Patient relations is the right place for those.
  • Cash or gift cards, unless you know the workplace allows them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you write in a thank you card to a doctor?

Thank the doctor by name, mention one thing they did that helped you, and add a short update on how you are doing. Three or four sentences is plenty.

How do you address a thank you card to a nurse if you do not know their name?

Address it to the nurses of the unit, such as "To the Nurses of 4 West," and mail it to the hospital with the unit name on the envelope. Inside, mention the dates of your stay so the staff know who it is from.

Is it appropriate to send a thank you note to a hospice nurse after a death?

Yes. A note from the family is a kind way to thank the hospice team, and there is no wrong time to send it. Mention your loved one by name and one way the team helped.
