Gift wrap, ribbon and a card on a table

A thank you note for a gift does not need to be long. Name the gift, say one thing you like about it, and thank the person for thinking of you. Two or three sentences is enough.

Below are 104 thank you messages for gifts, sorted by who the gift came from and what it was. Copy one into your card, change the details to fit, and sign your name. For thank you notes that are not about a gift, see our full guide to what to write in a thank you card.

How to Write a Thank You Note for a Gift

  1. Greet them by name. "Dear Aunt Sue," or "Hi Mark," is enough.
  2. Name the gift. "Thank you for the scarf" reads warmer than "Thank you for the gift."
  3. Say how you are using it or why you like it. One specific detail is plenty.
  4. Add a line about them. Mention a visit, a plan, or simply that you are glad they thought of you.
  5. Sign off. "With thanks," "Love," or "Gratefully" all work.

Example: "Dear Aunt Sue, thank you for the red scarf. I wore it to work on Monday and got three compliments. I hope we get to see you at Easter. Love, Katie"

Late Thank You Notes for a Gift

A late note is always better than no note. Apologize once, briefly, and then say thank you.

  • I am sorry this note is late, but I did not want to miss saying thank you for the lovely gift.
  • This thank you is overdue. I have used your gift every day since.
  • Better late than never: thank you so much for the gift.
  • I should have written sooner. Thank you for your generous gift.
  • It has taken me too long to write this, but I am grateful for your gift.
  • Thank you for the gift. I have been meaning to write since the day I opened it.

Thank You Notes Kids Can Write

Young children can dictate a line while a parent writes, then add a drawing or sign their own name. Older kids can write a short note on their own.

  • Thank you for the book. My mom reads it to me at bedtime.
  • Thank you for the art set. I made you this picture.

  • Thank you for coming to my party and for the present.

Religious Thank You Messages for a Gift

For a friend or family member who shares your faith, a short blessing or verse fits well. The verses are from the New International Version (NIV). Our Christian Cross Thank You Cards suit these messages.

  • Thank you for the gift. We thank God for friends like you.
  • Thank you for the Bible. I read from it every morning.
  • Thank you for your generous gift. You are an answer to our prayers.
  • Thank you for the cross necklace. I will wear it with gratitude.
  • Thank you for thinking of us. God bless you and your family.
  • Thank you for the gift. We are praying for you this season.

Bible verses for a thank you note

  • "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." (James 1:17)
  • "Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!" (2 Corinthians 9:15)
  • "I thank my God every time I remember you." (Philippians 1:3)

How to Sign a Thank You Note

"With thanks," "Gratefully," "With love," "Many thanks," and "Warmly" all work. For a family note, sign everyone's name, or write "From all of us" and list the names. For more options, see how to sign a card.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon should I send a thank you note for a gift?

Within two weeks is a good goal. For Christmas gifts, the first week or two of January works. For wedding gifts, see our wedding thank you card wording guide.

Do I need to send a thank you note if I thanked them in person?

It is not required, but a short note is always appreciated, especially by grandparents and anyone who mailed a gift.

Should I mention the amount of a money gift?

No. Thank them for their generosity and say how you plan to use it.

Can I send one note for several gifts from the same person?

Yes. Mention each gift by name in the same note.

Is a text enough?

A text is fine as a quick thank you right away. A card is better for gifts from grandparents, older relatives, and anyone who went to extra trouble.
