Fireworks over the water on New Year's Eve

Here are happy New Year wishes, messages and greetings you can copy into a card. A New Year card is a simple way to thank people for the past year and wish them well in the next one. It also works if your Christmas cards did not go out in time.

The messages are sorted by who you are writing to, from family and friends to coworkers and clients. New Year's Day 2027 is Friday, January 1.

How to Write a New Year Card

  1. Open with their name. "Dear Grandma," or "Hi Sam," is plenty.
  2. Wish them a happy New Year. Pick a wish below or write your own.
  3. Add one line about the year. Thank them for something from 2026, or mention a plan for 2027.
  4. Close and sign. "Cheers to 2027," "With love," or "All the best" all work.

Example: "Dear Grandma, Happy New Year! Thank you for all the Sunday dinners this year. We can't wait to see you in the spring. With love, Katie and Josh"

Frequently Asked Questions

When is New Year's Day 2027?

New Year's Day 2027 is Friday, January 1. New Year's Eve is Thursday, December 31, 2026.

When should I mail New Year cards?

Mail them in the last week of December so they arrive around January 1. New Year cards are also a good choice if you missed the Christmas mailing dates, and it is fine to send them through mid-January.

Is it "Happy New Year" or "Happy New Year's"?

Write "Happy New Year" as a greeting. Use "New Year's" only before another word, as in New Year's Eve or New Year's Day.

What should I write in a New Year card for business?

Thank them for their business, wish them a happy and successful new year, and sign with your name and company. The client messages above are ready to copy.

What is a good short New Year greeting?

"Happy New Year and all the best in 2027," "Wishing you a healthy and happy new year" and "Cheers to a great year ahead" all fit any card. Add your name and one personal line if there is room.

How long should a New Year message be?

One to three sentences is enough. A short wish plus one line about the past year or the year ahead reads well on any card.
