How to Wish Someone a Happy Hanukkah in a Card

Happy Hanukkah in Hebrew and Yiddish

A few Hebrew and Yiddish words can make a Hanukkah card feel more personal. Spellings in English letters vary, and all of the versions below are widely used.

Chanukah Sameach means "Happy Hanukkah" in Hebrew. The "ch" in both words is a throaty sound, like the "ch" in the German name Bach.

Chag Sameach (khahg sah-MAY-akh) means "happy holiday." It is used for many Jewish holidays, including Hanukkah, Passover and Sukkot, so it is a safe choice for any holiday card to a Jewish friend.

Chag Urim Sameach means "happy Festival of Lights." The word urim means lights, and Festival of Lights is another name for Hanukkah.

A freylekhn Khanike is the Yiddish way to say "Happy Hanukkah." It is also written as "A Freilichen Chanukah."

Nes gadol haya sham means "a great miracle happened there." The first letter of each word appears on the four sides of a dreidel. Dreidels made in Israel change the last word, so they read "a great miracle happened here."

Shalom means peace, and it is also used to say hello and goodbye. It makes a simple, friendly sign-off above your name.
