A thank you card with succulents on the front

Teachers keep the notes that families send them, often for years. A short card that names one specific thing a teacher did means more than a gift card with only a signature.

Here is how to write a teacher appreciation card, with messages from parents and from students, for the end of the year, Teacher Appreciation Week and the other staff who help your child.

When Is Teacher Appreciation Week?

Teacher Appreciation Week is the first full week of May. In 2027 it runs from Monday, May 3 to Friday, May 7, and National Teacher Day is Tuesday, May 4. The last week of school, the winter holidays and the first week of a new school year are also good times to send a card.

How to Write a Teacher Appreciation Card

Three or four sentences is enough.

  1. Address the teacher by name.
  2. Thank them for one specific thing. It could be a skill your child learned, a hard week they helped with, or the way they made the classroom feel.
  3. Say what difference it made.
  4. Sign it, and let your child add a line or a drawing.

Example: "Dear Mrs. Patel, thank you for the extra time you spent helping Leo with reading this year. He now reads to his little sister every night, and he is proud of it. We are so grateful. The Garcia Family"

Teacher Appreciation Quotes

A quote at the top of the card, followed by one line about what the teacher did for your child, makes a simple teacher appreciation note.

  • "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." (Henry Adams)
  • "It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge." (Albert Einstein)
  • "I touch the future. I teach." (Christa McAuliffe)
  • "The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." (William Arthur Ward)
  • "One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings." (Carl Jung)
  • "Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself." (Chinese proverb)
  • "Teaching is a work of heart." (Saying)
  • "It takes a big heart to help shape little minds." (Saying)

Religious Messages for a Teacher

These suit a Christian school, a Sunday school teacher or a teacher you know shares your faith.

  • Thank you for teaching our children with such patience and love. God bless you.
  • We thank God for you and the difference you make in our children's lives.
  • Praying that God blesses you this summer with rest and joy.
  • "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9. Thank you for all your hard work this year.

What to Avoid in a Teacher Card

  • A generic "thanks for a great year" with nothing else.
  • Mixing a complaint or a request in with the thanks.
  • Comparing this teacher to another one.
  • Comments about grades or test scores.
  • Writing the whole card for a child who is old enough to write it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I write in a teacher appreciation card?

Thank the teacher by name for one specific thing they did, say what difference it made, and sign it. Two or three sentences is enough.

When is Teacher Appreciation Week in 2027?

Teacher Appreciation Week 2027 is Monday, May 3 to Friday, May 7. National Teacher Day is Tuesday, May 4.

Should my child write the card?

If they can, yes. A few sentences in a child's handwriting mean a lot to most teachers. Younger children can draw a picture and sign their name.

Is a card enough without a gift?

Yes. A sincere note is often the part of the gift a teacher keeps.

Who else should get a card?

Aides, specialists, coaches, librarians, bus drivers and front office staff do a lot of work that goes unthanked. A boxed set makes it easy to include them.
