How to Write a First Birthday Card

  1. Write to the baby and the parents. Address the card to the birthday child, then add a line for Mom and Dad.
  2. Mention something from the year. A first smile, a favorite toy or a funny habit makes the card personal.
  3. Add a wish for the year ahead. Good health, lots of laughter or new things to see and try all work well.
  4. Keep it short and sign it clearly. Two to four sentences is plenty. Sign with the name the child will know you by, such as "Aunt Kate."

Here is an example: "Happy 1st birthday, Noah! We loved watching you learn to crawl and clap this year. We hope your second year is full of fun. Love, Uncle Ben and Aunt Sara."

Keepsake Notes for a Child to Read When Older

Many parents save first birthday cards in a memory box. To make yours meaningful years from now, write to the child as a future reader. Say who you are, describe what they were like at one and share what you hope for them. Add the date if you can.

  • Dear little one, at one year old you loved bath time, peekaboo and the family dog. We hope you still find joy in simple things.
  • Happy 1st birthday. I am writing this so you will know how loved you were from the very beginning. Today a whole room of people sang to you.
  • On your first birthday you clapped for yourself, waved at everyone and fell asleep before the cake was cut. You brought us so much happiness.
  • Today you turned one. You cannot read this yet, but I hope you keep it. I will be cheering for you at every birthday after this one.
  • This is the first of many birthday cards I plan to write to you. I hope you save them all. Happy 1st birthday, with all my love.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you write in a first birthday card?

Most people write a birthday wish to the baby, a line about the past year and a wish for the year ahead. It is also kind to congratulate the parents on finishing the first year. Two to four sentences is plenty.

Who should a first birthday card be addressed to?

Address the card to the baby by name, since it is their birthday. You can add a separate line for the parents inside. Writing to the child also makes the card a nice keepsake.

Is it okay to put money in a first birthday card?

Yes, many relatives include cash, a check or a gift card. Mention it in your message so the parents know what it is for. Our guide on how much money to put in a card can help you choose an amount.

How should I sign a first birthday card?

Sign with the name the child will grow up calling you, such as "Grandma Sue" or "Uncle Mike." Closings like "With love" or "Hugs and kisses" work well. For more options, see our guide on how to sign a card.
