Friends holding a birthday cake with lit candles

A religious birthday greeting lets you celebrate someone and also thank God for their life. It can be as simple as "God bless you on your birthday" or as personal as a prayer written just for them.

Below you will find short religious birthday wishes, blessings, prayers and Bible verses, along with messages for family members, friends and people in your church. Most of the wishes are written from a Christian point of view.

How to Write a Religious Birthday Message

A religious birthday message does not need to be long. Three or four sentences is enough for most cards.

  1. Wish them a happy birthday by name.
  2. Add a blessing, a short prayer or a Bible verse. Choose one that fits the person, such as a verse about joy for a cheerful friend or a verse about strength for someone going through a hard year.
  3. Say something personal. Mention a quality you admire or something you are thankful for.
  4. Sign your name.

Example: "Happy birthday, Linda! 'The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.' (Psalm 118:24) I thank God for your friendship and for the way you look after everyone at church. Praying you have a wonderful year. Love, Carol"

What is a good blessing for a birthday?

The priestly blessing in Numbers 6:24-26 is one of the most popular: "The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace."

What Bible verse is good for a birthday card?

Psalm 118:24 ("The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad") and Psalm 139:14 ("I am fearfully and wonderfully made") are two common choices.
