When a friend who shares your faith is grieving, a sympathy card can offer comfort and hope. The best Christian condolence messages are short and sincere. Say you are sorry, say you are praying, and let your friend know they are not alone.

Below are Christian condolence messages for a friend, messages for the loss of a parent, spouse or child, short prayers you can write in a card, and Bible verses (NIV) to pair with your own words.

How to Write a Christian Sympathy Card

  1. Say you are sorry. Use the name of the person who died if you knew them.
  2. Share a memory or something you admired. Their faith, their kindness or how they served others.
  3. Tell them you are praying. Be specific if you can, such as praying for rest or for strength at work.
  4. Offer something practical. A meal, a ride or a call next week.

Example: "Dear Karen, I am so sorry about your mom. I will always remember her singing in the front row at church. I am praying for you and your family, and I will bring dinner on Thursday. With love, Beth"

  • Father, be near to my friend in her grief. Give her rest and strength.
  • Lord, thank You for the life of this dear man. Please carry his family through this time.
  • God, please surround this family with Your love and with good friends.
  • Lord, give them hope for tomorrow and grace for today.

Bible Verses to Write With Your Message

A short verse followed by one line of your own works well.

  • "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." (Psalm 34:18) I am praying for you.
  • "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." (Matthew 5:4) Holding you in prayer.
  • "Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy." (John 16:22) With love and prayers.
  • "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." (1 Peter 5:7) We are here for you.
  • "Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning." (Psalm 30:5) Praying for your family.

What Not to Say

  • "God needed another angel" or "Everything happens for a reason." Many grieving people find these hard to hear.
  • "I know how you feel." Every loss is different.
  • "At least..." Any sentence that starts this way tends to shrink the loss.
  • Long explanations of why God allows suffering. A card is not the place for it.

How to Sign a Christian Sympathy Card

"With love and prayers," "In Christ," "Praying for you," and "With deepest sympathy" all work well. If you are signing for a group, such as a Bible study or church committee, write the group name and have each person sign below it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good Christian condolence message?

"I am so sorry. I am praying for you and your family, and I am here whenever you need me" is simple and sincere. Add the name of the person who died and one memory if you can.

Should I include a Bible verse in a sympathy card?

If you know the family shares your faith, a short verse can be a comfort. Psalm 34:18 and Matthew 5:4 are two of the most common. Add a line of your own after it.

What if I don't know if the family is religious?

Use a general message instead, such as "Thinking of you and your family with love." Save prayers and verses for people you know will welcome them.
